Best Music Videos Of July 2013

A little bit of everything this month... One takes, elaborate set-pieces, some NSFW, others a bit dangerous, and genres that range from hip-hop to punk to country and even a little Tijuana Brass.

Organized thematically, becase at heart I am still making mix tapes.

The Aston Shuffle "Can't Stop Now" (Pensacola, dir.)

"Can't Stop Now" is an especially immersive video game that goes way beyond 3D — there's some anaglyph trickery with the colors and interlacing that might reveal some fun suprises if you've got the glasses — and delivers players into a dangerous situation.

The rest of us, however, have to wait for the new Grand Theft Auto.

Young love proves to be especially complex and mysterious in this evocative narrative clip by Suzie Vlcek, who also directed "Lazy Eye" for Silversun Pickups.

Childish Gambino "Clapping For The Wrong Reasons" (Hiro Murai, dir.) [short film]

This teaser for the upcoming short-film Clapping For The Wrong Reason doesn't provide enough meat to really determine what it's gonna be — perhaps we need one of those "In a world where..." voiceovers — but it does look intriguing with a cast that ranges from Flying Lotus to porn star Abella Anderson, and, of course, actor Donald "Childish Gambino" Glover himself.

Personally, I like to think it's gonna be an indierap mash-up of Slacker and Sunset Boulevard...

A young man "enjoys" his unhappy birthday, all the while overlooking the little dollops of magical color that make the world a bit less miserable.

DJ Fresh vs. Diplo "Earthquake" (Jonas & Francois, dir.)

These DIY superheroes inspired by Kick Ass 2 don't seem capable of much beyond picking their noses and looking cool, which is actually a pretty impressive superpower if you think about it. Just don't expect them to stop that huge green monster that's about to destroy your city.
