Director Hannah Lux Davis on Lil Wayne, Staying Creative, and Working with Boy(friend)s

Working under the production company London Alley Entertainment, Hannah Lux Davis offers her fresh style and feminine perspective to the music video scene. After getting her first job in 2008, it’s been a non-stop whirlwind of writing treatments and booking videos for artists like Sean Kingston, Jay Sean, Cher Lloyd, and Lil Wayne (who calls her Miss Hannah).

Ok, maybe it wasn't as easy as that. “It’s challenging to constantly be creative and have the energy and motivation to keep trudging through whatever schedule there is,” Davis confesses about the struggles of advancing her craft and keeping it current. She edits her work, too, so her job is only half done when she calls wrap.

But she keeps the creativity flowing. Churning out treatments and staying on top of her game, last week she was in Miami for Birdman’s “Tapout” shoot, working with more Cash Money artists like Nicki Minaj and Mack Maine, and superstar newcomer, Future. As the first female director on a Cash Money shoot, the artists and crew appreciate her perspective as a woman and the refreshing atmosphere she brings to the set.

Her great attitude and ideas means she gets a lot of repeat customers. She loves working with artists again because it gives her a chance to put to use what she learned the first time around. “At the end of the day, everybody wants to work with their friends,” she says, “With the people they know and are happy with and can trust.”

Then it probably doesn’t hurt that her boyfriend is one of her producers. Like true professionals, the two leave their personal lives behind once they step on set, and when the water in Lil Wayne’s “Love Me” video started to leak out onto a hardwood stage, he gave her no preferential girlfriend treatment and pulled the plug, despite her protests. Luckily, if you watch the video, it looks like they got what they needed pre-flood.

The dynamic works for them. “I wouldn’t be able to date another director,” Davis laughs. “Like hell no, I’m far too competitive for that!”
