NEWS: MTVU Woodie Nominees
MTVU announced the nominees for their second annual Woodie Awards this week, which lets college students vote for their favorite artists and videos. The Arcade Fire lead all contenders with five nominations. Other nominees include Gorillaz, M.I.A., Matisyahu and Death Cab For Cutie. The MTVU Woodie Awards ceremony and concert will be held at NYC's Roseland Ballroom on November 2, with footage set to debut on MTVU and MTVU.com on November 10.
The Woodie Award moniker is, of course, a cheeky reference to the fact that the vast majority of artists nominated aren't receiving Gold and Platinum plaques, yet. Instead, they get a chance to acquire some Wooden awards based directly on fan voting. One very interesting aspect of this year's Woodies will be the "Streaming Woodie Award", which will be set up like the NCAA Final Four tournament. Twenty videos will be available for streaming in week long heats of five videos each. The four winners of those preliminary rounds will them duke it out for the final award.

NEW RELEASE: Bloc Party "Helicopter"
Bloc Party "Helicopter" Vice/Atlantic
Minivegas, directors
Luc Schurgers, producer
Minivegas, production co
Description: UK creative team Minivegas take the blokes in Bloc Party and turn them into Saturday Morning Cartoon characters. This entirely animated clip begins with a performance, but then plunges Bloc Party into all sorts of adventures. They get a lift from a giant bug, discove ra spaceship that's protected by pig-headed lizards and then get blasted from a giant gun into outer space. On an interesting side note, this video was originally created for the song "The Pioneers," but has been synced to go with the American single, "Helicopter." The original version can be seen at the traveling Resfest.

Nathan Cox, director/editor
Michael J Katz, producer
Merge @ Crossroads, production co
Lukas Ettlin, DP
Labuda Management, rep
Description: Disturbed perform this rocker at an decrepit facility that seems to have been a former house of horrors. Quick cutaways of various images emit a whiff of sex, death and violence, all of which is compounded by purposefully blurry and often beautiful cinematography.
