MNEK "Paradise" (Ciaran Lyons, dir.)

MNEK's "Paradise" video explores beauty, pain, and makes a powerful statement about police brutality.

Ciaran Lyons, director: "I think the themes of MNEK’s track will resonate with a lot of people. What grabbed me was the underlying idea of the different responses elicited by the chaos of the modern world - the desire to escape from the real world into a fantasy paradise vs the possibility of standing strong and separate from all the madness and cruelty, in the hope of preserving something better. It’s a theme reminiscent of those who “carry the fire” in The Road.

The intention with the video was to echo these themes, while maintaining the ambiguity of the lyrics. Escaping, or standing apart can be seen either as an act of strength and heroism, or callousness and cowardice. So we have this beautiful human walking through a fantasy landscape made from symbols of growth and decay, never stopping, never getting involved, but coming out the other end still intact, and still beautiful."

Slaves "Sockets" (Ciaran Lyons, dir.)

The multi-talented Ciaran Lyons put his body on the line for Virgin/EMI duo Slaves, both in front and behind the camera, describing his electric new video as, "like an episode of Bottom directed by Jan Svankmajer. This aesthetic concept guided all my decision making: the grimy production design, the extensive use of action-based close-ups, the slapstick violence, and the Rick Mayall inspired performance."

Hero Fisher "Punk" (Ciaran Lyons, dir.)

From the Director:

"The aim was for the video to show two very distinct depictions of Hero and the band. It was about acknowledging that they are simultaneously performers, and just a bunch of friends who play music together.

So one section of the video is very stylised and theatrical, and the other section is as natural and raw as possible. Once we started pushing this concept a bit further, we ended up experimenting with different filming equipment and techniques. It was a really playful process."

Mike Mago "Outlines" (Ciaran Lyons, dir.)

Ciaran Lyons, director: "The video grew from the idea of a dancer's movements leaving behind visual echoes (outlines) as she moves around a space. Together with a great dancer, I started playing around with this idea to see where we could take it. We were interested in her movements creating a variety of different types of figures. Sometimes her movements are graceful; sometimes they're awkward. Sometimes they're dreamy and abstract; sometimes they look like backing dancers on Top of the Pops."
