From being called upon to work with Wretch 32, receiving support from Adidas and performing his first ever London show at the Royal Albert Hall at 21, the now 23-year-old artiste making his mark on the urban scene goes by the name of Tobi Sunmola.
Originally born in Nigeria, living in Manchester Tobi Sunmola continues to solidify his name across the UK and beyond. Following the release of his debut single 'Run free' which was premiered by Huw Stephens on BBC radio 1 and heavily supported by the BBC, Tobi accompanied the single with a video premiering with Complex magazine. This created a spark in the industry which saw the MOBO'S name him as one of their 'Ones to watch' and a stunning performance at the Radio 1 Big Weekend Exeter in May 2016.
Since releasing his debut EP 'Childhood Culture' that he describes as 'a fusion between his heritage and current environment'. Tobi found himself partnering up with Director Luke Logan of Foundry Film Studios to visit the dark side bringing an otherworldly, abstract style to the highly anticipated video for two tracks from Tobi's first EP, namely 'Never forget we're here' and 'Tales from the East'.
The video, inspired by visual artist Bimmy's cover of Tobi's first EP 'Childhood Culture', plays on the cyclical nature and inherent flaws in the human sense of self and explores the pysche of Tobi as he looks to navigate a successful path through the music industry, whilst trying to avoid self-immolation as an artist.
Shot on location over two nights at Tandle Hills, Oldham and Cowm Quary, Roachdale Luke comments 'Our crew and everyone who contributed, I honestly can't thank enough. To see everyone getting behind what is essentially a passion project, spending two nights in freezing conditions, it's really humbling.'
Tobi reflected on the experience saying 'It was a pleasure working with Luke and The Foundry team. They have been dedicated to the project from the start and it's great to see how film encapsulates the exact feel and thoughts I had when making this record and it's an honour to present that visually.'
The tracks are available on Soundcloud right now and Tobi's second EP is due for release mid- July.
