Do You Want Your Virtual Reality Music Video?

Samsung VR Device Launches; VEVO to Provide Content

What good is you virtual reality headset if you don't have something cool to explore? And shouldn't that something cool be music videos?

Wouldn't you love to wander, even virtually, through an amazing music video world — like maybe OK Go "The Writing's On The Wall", or maybe even Motley Crue "Girls Girls Girls" (same on you)?

That might be possible very soon, thanks to a partnership between Samsung's new VR headset and online video giants VEVO.

Samsung announced Gear VR today — an immersive headset built in partnership with the makers of Oculus Rift that might bring virtual reality to masses. And as we've seen on the Internet, the masses like bitesize bits of entertainment like music videos... which VEVO will be providing.

VEVO product manager Jon Li breaks down the music video component for your VR world as something potentially game-changing:

"Today I am pleased to announce our forthcoming global launch of Vevo on Samsung Gear VR, a 3D virtual application designed specifically for Gear VR.

When we took on this opportunity, we threw out the user experience playbook and re-thought how people could experience music videos. We challenged ourselves to think outside the box. The result - why not put music videos in an immersive, full screen theater experience? So, we designed Vevo on Gear VR to be a new way to fully engage in music videos. It’s so different, I am convinced it will transform how music videos are created and experienced.

Imagine putting on your Gear VR, launching the Vevo app and finding yourself transported to the Apollo Theater in New York City, where Pharrell is performing live in front of you. Now, you understand our goal for Vevo on Gear VR.

And, of course, it wouldn’t be the Vevo experience our viewers love without our extensive HD catalogue of over 100,000 official music videos and original shows. Viewers in the US and Canada will be able to enjoy Vevo TV, our genre focused channels featuring 24/7 hand-curated music video programming.  Internationally, viewers can enjoy a custom channel of localized international programming. All of this can be experienced on the full screen in a virtual theater." [via VEVO.com]
