Maroon 5 shows more than a little edge by hiring Jonas Akerlund (he of the bitch smacking up) to create a subversive "NC-17" video for the already surprisingly dark tale of lover’s revenge, "Wake Up Call." The look is pure sunshine noir with an effective mix of clean photography and dirty, dirty souls. The clip uses the "trailer for a movie" template to great effect, showing bursts of sex and violence – people are tied up in a station wagon, shots are fired, bodies are dumped – that leave things much more unexplained than the typical Hollywood movie trailer. There are cameos from Six Feet Under’s Jeremy Sisto and porn star Stormy Daniels, plus a "shocking" ending that pretty much eliminates the possibility of a sequel.
