NEW YORK, NY, September 10, 2014 – Alma Har'el, famous for her ability to artistically blur the lines between documentary and fiction, has joined the Epoch Films roster of diverse and talented commercial directors.
Har'el is best known for her documentary Bombay Beach, which took the top prize at Tribeca Film Festival in 2011, received a nomination for a 2011 Independent Spirit "Truer than Fiction" award, and has been taught in several universities, including Harvard’s Sensory Ethnography Lab and Film Center, as a genre redefining work. Stephan Holden of The New York Times wrote of the film, “[it] “looks and feels like a fever dream about an alternate universe. Suffused with a sense of wonder, it hovers, dancing inside its own ethereal bubble”.
More recently, Har'el directed Airbnb's first ever global campaign with Pereira & O'Dell. Featured as an Editor's Pick in Creativity, the “Views” spot put viewers into the role of travelers experiencing breathtaking scenes right outside their windows, in 16 different accommodations around the world.
Her music video work with Beirut and Jack Penate have earned her award nominations in the MTV and UK VMAs, and her video for Sigur Rós became an overnight sensation, gaining millions of views on YouTube. Featuring Shia LaBeouf and Denna Thomsen, it was applauded as a unique artistic achievement and covered in the media around the world. Filmmaker magazine called it “provocative and dramatically compelling”, while Nowness magazine called it “Hypnotic”.
Har'el was born in Tel Aviv, where she began her film career as a video artist, mixing live video content for concerts around Europe.
