R&B songstress supreme has Beyonce dropped two videos from her new album I Am, both in black and white, but that hasn't stopped colorful discussion about her work on the internets. In "Single Ladies, (Put a Ring On It)" Mrs. Sean Carter, clad in a one-piece swimsuit, proves she has moves and legs for days. The singer and two back-up dancers work it for about 3 minutes in front of an empty backdrop while director Jake Nava uses lighting and minimal visual effects to create striking images. Some have pointed out the choreography is very reminiscent of some of Bob Fosse's work and that some of the moves are a little close. Maybe, but the outfits are much better. In the other clip, Beyonce flips around artful notions of relationships and gender for the ballad "If I Were A Boy." The singer assumes the life of her (fictional) hubby for a day, donning a police uniform, hanging out with boys all night and dealing with her partner's insecurity when she gets home. Shot in black and white (again), the video shows a less-than-glamourous side of the singer as she mixes it up with criminals in the city and performs with a the minimum of make-up allowed under international diva guidelines. "About a Boy," directed by Jake Nava (again), is a bold statement that succeeds with subtlety, intelligence and a splendid locker room scene. [review by Craig Belcher] --> watch "If I Were A Boy"
