WATCH IT: Kanye West "Power" (Marco Brambilla, dir.)

"It's not a video, it's a portrait" - Kanye West (ed: yes, that was originally in all-caps, of course)

Civilization is an elevator installation by video artist Marco Brambilla at the Standard Hotel NYC that masterfully mashes-up of hundreds of film-clips into a dizzying tableau that begins with the fiery pits of hell and slowly pans up through the heavens, only to arrive right back where it started. Basically the elevator is purgatory, and you're forced to consider your ultimate destination as you're going up or going down. "Power" is a follow-up work by Brambilla, a 90 second piece commissioned by Kanye West after seeing Civilization. It's indeed a portrait in the classical vein focusing on Kanye as the King and then slowly zooming out to show how everything that gets built up, eventually gets knocked down.

Since the "video" is so short, there's no reason not to watch the making-of, which focuses mainly on Brambilla and his artistic style. --> watch "Power" + a making-of
