Spence Nicholson, dir: "Essentially we created custom filters with the shape or words we wanted. What happens is the shape or the word is made to fit inside the lens aperture so the shape or the word becomes the aperture itself. Normally when lights are out of focus you will notice the characteristics of the aperture, so normally circles or hexagons, depending on the type of aperture (bladed, etc) but in our case once the filter is placed over the lens and the word is now our aperture then the word appears when the light source is out of focus. We created over 40 custom filters for the shoot. "
