I was first inspired to write “Beautiful Girl” by the incredible, beautiful women in my life who have overcome the messaging that persists in our culture telling them that in so many ways they are not good enough, that they don’t measure up because they don’t conform to an impossible airbrushed, photo-shopped standard of beauty. I am inspired by the girls whose cultures relegate them to second class citizen status treating them as inferior and who, in spite of the overwhelming odds against them, prevail – and I am inspired by the millions of girls around the world who cannot. Young girls need to know they are beautiful – because they are, and we all, especially boys and men, need to recognize, respect and reinforce that message. “Beautiful Girl” is not a song just for girls – This song is for boys, for all of us. We all need to realize and appreciate the value and impact of confident girls becoming strong, capable and powerful women in society. The more we support and amplify this message, the greater the number of girls who will feel, who will know they are beautiful.
