Now that Beyonce's National Anthem rendition has become a debate of whether she lip-synced or not — which strikes me as eerily similar to the "Does Obama use a Telepromter?!?!" non-scandal — and is on the bubble of going full Beyoncégate, it's time to revisit.
Thankfully, former Soul Coughing frontman and solo musician Mike Doughty has studied to tape with Zapruder-like detail and is pretty damn sure that Beyonce sang live. And I agree.
Most of the commentary has been maddeningly vague and using a pre-recorded track (as admitted) is not the same thing as lipsyncing. And, yes, maybe there was a guide-vocal, but Doughty nails all the points — the earpiece, the mic positioning, the grassy knoll — even comparing it with music videos that featured lip-syncing.
Great read for anyone who pays attention to live performances, video shoots or silly pointless debates.
