IN DEPTH: The Big Pink "Dominos"

The Big Pink Dominos

In the lyrics, the girls fall like dominoes. In the video, the girls are ice sculptures that explode to the big beats of this song. Different metaphors, similar idea: Love will be your ruin. UK rockers The Big Pink pound out this gem — think of "When The Levee Breaks" meets "Standing Outside a Broken Phonebooth With Money in My Hand" meets "Public Image" — in a slo-mo haze of pink mist, while director Timothy Saccenti orchestrates the explosion of several literal Ice Queens that are lifesize ice sculptures in the shapely shapes of sexy women.

Timothy Saccenti, director: "After having photographed the band for their new album A Brief History of Love —  a modern classic, in my opinion —  I felt I had a good idea of their aesthetic, which is a combination of the band The Stone Roses being kicked in the balls by Suicide.

We wanted to keep the video like the track: simple, epic, and somewhat heartbreaking. The difficulty was coalescing the simplicity of the song's structure and meaning with the band's bombastic, noise-based background. The approach we decided upon for 'Dominos' was to, first off, avoid any physical dominoes what so ever. The idea to have ice sculptures came from trying to create a visual representation of the noise effects in the track, as well as the emotion of having one's heart shattered into a thousand points of light.

And then there was the ice. Shooting with the Phantom camera required a huge amount of hot lighting, which we thought could ruin the sculptures, but the melting ice made them even more beautiful and glistening. Another tricky element was in the edit, trying to cut the piece so it wouldn't be completely obvious, as the elements we were working with — ice, lights, explosions, high speed filming etc — can be very cliche. Ryan McKenna did a fantastic job of editing just enough off beat to allow for the viewer to be emotionally engaged without being hit over the head. Overall it was meant to be a simple pop video with a visual twist."
