Director Parris on Lil Wayne/Big Sean "My Homies Still" and Aurora, CO

Lwayne_skeleOne small story you may have noticed on the edges of all the Aurora shooting press coverage was a theory that the Lil Wayne video "My Homies Still" predicted the tragedy, namely through a scene in which 12 skeletons are seen in a movie theater.

This, of course, is absurd. Although it's a sad commentary that one of the absurd images from one of Lil Wayne's most absurd videos is the one that strikes some people as having the biggest connection to the real world.

We spoke to video director Parris about the controversy and here's his take:

Parris:

"This was one of those videos where the idea came to me quickly. I wanted to do something bizarre and wacky, but with a logical link to it all. The idea was to go with opposites and connections: A guy with a dog's head. Or a movie theater of skeletons watching a horror movie.

I knew there had to be cameo shots and didn't want it to be cliche. We didn't have a specific number in mind, we just randomly filled the theater with skeletons. Originally, Wayne wasn't in the theater set up but he decided to jump in and do his thing while we were still rolling. We only shot one take so we cropped the shot to get a close up.

What happened in Colorado was a sad and unfortunate event but it has nothing to do with a video that was filmed and released before the shootings. I don't even know if you could call it a coincidence as much as people looking for connections and meanings after the tragedy. What worries me is that there are actually people who went out of their way to make a connection of the two when there was none to begin with."
