DJ Lubel "Women Of LA" (Brandon Kusher, Dir.)

THE WOMEN OF LA with DJ Lubel, Pauly Shore, Jaleel White, Dennis Haskins

I understand the feminist critique — I mean, I've referenced Betty f**king Friedan on this music video blog, which should qualify me for some sort of award, or at least an Oprah Magazine subscription— but it misses the point: The reason this video works is because there's no discernible reason on display as to why a member of the opposite sex — let alone the top 1% of hotness that's depicted here as thriving in L.A. — should be attracted to the nerdy, gullible, nebbishy and much too nice for his own good DJ Lubel. Now, maybe DJL isn't the underdog he portrays himself to be — much like Jaleel White isn't a gangsta rapper, Mr. Belding's real life isn't probably so glamorous, and I don't think Pauly Shore is any more likable in real life — and, yes the idea that only gorgous people live in L.A. is as flawed as the idea that everyone who lives in Williamsburg is an artist or makes artisinal pickles, but those are all the enemies of comedy.

Simply put, there's probably a lane for an internet star that blends Weird Al with early Woody Allen.  And since this wil be DJL's second viral smash — the first was the equally well-produced Wrong Hole — we should get accustomed to him, even if that means accepting that maybe both hits show fear of a female planet.
