Robin Brunson shoots Public Service Broadcasting back to the early days of television.
Based around a live performance, Robin Brunson from the directing duo Hexstatic lays the band over black and white archive footage to give the feel of a live broadcast from the dawn of live television. Robin explains the process from start to finish.
"...Will from the band had a rough edit for the song he used in the live show. I came up with the idea of placing the band into the footage, getting inspiration from scenes in ‘Forest Gump’ and a recent exhibition by Flora Borsi. This way the band would be more prevalent in the video and it also injected a bit of humour.
I shot the band separately over two days at my studio on a green screen, getting as many shots I could, as it’s necessary to get good positions to fit in with the existing footage.
Then came the task of fitting them in the footage, which took a fair while. I had to do a lot of tracking of the original footage as it moved around a lot and was jerky, so we had to track the new footage to move along with that. It didn’t help that the comping, of things like ‘screens’, in the original footage was also very off!..."
Steve Dix from Liquid Management liked Robin’s brief from day one, and believes it was the easiest music video they have produced for Public Service Broadcasting.
"...We met up with Robin before our headline show at Village Underground back in May and settled on the idea there and then, we liked his idea as soon as we first read his pitch and thought it a nice idea sending the guys back in time! After that it was very smooth sailing, it was the easiest music video to produce - from our end - that we've ever done. I'm not sure he'd say the same though as I'm sure it was very complicated trying to get it all to fit seamlessly..."
