I was checking the 2012 DGA TV and commercial nominees over at Deadline and came across a comment asking, "Why don't they give a Best Director Award for Music Videos?"
The answer is simple: Because the DGA doesn't represent the interests of music video directors — unless they also happen to do qualifying commercial, TV or feature work — and they don't provide their benefits/protections to music video sets and workers
Whether that's good or bad is always up for debate — remember the Music Video Director Alliance, or the comments that followed the music video publishing royalty agreement — but it's something that's alway worth discussing.
That said, there are two names on the DGA Best Commercial Director nominee list that should be familiar to music video people:
- Tom Kuntz — Electric Six "Gay Bar" and "Danger! High Voltage." And that totally genius Terry Crews Old Spice video from last year.
- Lance Acord — A frequent DP for Spike Jonze, including the VMA best cinematography winner Fatboy Slim "Weapon Of Choice"...
