NEWS: MTV base Launches in Africa

Mtv baseMTV Networks launched a pan-African channel called "MTV base" on Tuesday, February 22. The channel's playlist boasts familiar International and American acts alongside many African artists, including Femi Kuti, Zama Jobe, Angelique Kidjo, Nameless and SSP.

MTV base is reaching 1.3 million households in Africa via cable, satellite and MMDS providers.

ps: Just in case you're wondering, MMDS is short for Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service. It's a basically a technology that allows cable companies to broadcast their signals - hence it's nickname, "wireless cable". It's popular in South America, Africa and other areas where underground cable installation is cost prohibitive. Subscribers to an MMDS service need a special converter box and antenna. MMDS is a line-of-sight technology, meaning that you will not get reception if something is blocking your antenna from the transmitter.

Aren't you glad I looked that up for you?
