WATCH IT: Animal Collective "My Girls"

Animal Collective Animal Collective Surprise, surprise. Seeing as how the album cover for the latest Animal Collective is an optical illusion, you just knew that the first video would be a trippy affair. This animated freak fest for "My Girls" conjures up memories of Laser Floyd, glow sticks, lava lamps and a really odd patriotic, yet extremely cannabanoidal kaleidoscope show I saw in Upstate NY. You never quite see the band: Not only are blobs and bubbles and other sorts of extraterrestrial platelets and debris constantly drifting through the foreground, but the band members are either seen as silhouetted figures or goopy green creatures. Whether or not you love it probably depends on your overall take on a band and their intriguing, yet amorphous music — which currently sounds like Beach Boys melodies wafted over hypnotic loops that always stay a beat behind dance music. Consider it part Acid Test and part litmus test, separating all you (us?) old fogeys from the young and the hip. --> watch "My Girls" (YouTube, click the HD option)
