SNL star Fred Armisen learns two very important lessons in this lovely, old-timey homage to werewolf flicks:
- Asian chicks really fall for that "Hey, what's this behind your ear?" trick
- Never break a werewolf's heart
Philadelphia quintet Man Man may take a back seat to the drama and dialogue in this video, but director Lex Halaby nails a silly, yet kind of sad tone to perfectly complement this beery Waitesian love song. And Apatow players Charlyne Yi and Martin Starr shine as two confused freaks in love.
Lex Halaby, director: "Man Man singer Honus Honus and I both wanted to do something narrative driven and without performance. We knew we weren’t making an “MTV friendly” video because it clocks in at over 6 minutes and has narrative bookends. Once we threw away the conventional music video rules everything opened up for us... Honus had been batting around a werewolf concept with comedienne Charlyne Yi (Paper Heart, Knocked Up) so we developed a story and gave it a B-Movie aesthetic. Soon after, Fred Armisen from Saturday Night Live, and Martin Starr (Knocked Up, Freaks & Geeks, Adventureland) came on-board. We even have a brief cameo from Bad Religion guitarist [ed: and Epitaph/Anti founder] Brett Gurewitz as the bartender. We shot for two nights in Echo Park and Silverlake, those familiar with Los Angeles geography will notice the landmarks."
