Make Your Own 3D Printed Video with Cut Copy

I always love a music video with a DIY element that you can make at home, asussing you're properly equipped. In the same way They Might Be Giants "When Will You Die" and the accompanying 1/27 scale paper van that  would require a very large printer (or lots of Scotch Tape and time) if you wanted to recreate the video, making the characters here would require a 3D printer and serious nerd skills.

Years & Years "Real" (Robert Francis Müller, dir.)

I was contacted by Olly the lead singer of Years & Years to direct their latest video. The band and I worked together in coming up with this slightly dark and surreal concept. What the guys wanted was something that involved dancing, but had a narrative and this is what we came up with!

It was a great team effort and everyone went above and beyond what I expected. Being shot on a shoe string budget I have a lot of favours to repay now, but it was well worth it!

Cast:

Jon Hopkins "Collider" (Tom Haines, dir.)

It's a tale of two journeys, both of which are hopefully imaginary, in this jarring and compelling video for EDM artist Jon Hopkins.

Tom Haines, director:  “Jon’s music has a transportive quality, which can be blissful and expansive, but can also be internal, and more aggressive, and Collider is at this end of the spectrum. We wanted to create an internal journey, which was unflinching, singular and claustrophobic and at the same time liberating. The video is like a voodoo ceremony, where the lead character dances herself into frenzy, and through the dance gains access to a parallel dimension; it’s her unfurling thoughts, her dislocated mind, and hints at something more apocalyptic - an end game for her and us."

Arcade Fire "Just A Reflektor" (Anton Corbijn, dir.)

If you're gonna go big, you might as well let it go to your head.

The new Arcade Fire video has a mirror ball and a mirror man, giant head shells that the band wears, and a magical mystery mission. It's directed by Anton Corbijn, and the song is produced by James Murphy with backing vocals by David Bowie. Not a bad triumverate (and that's in addition to the Google Chrome interactive video they released earlier today).

Superchunk "Me & You & Jackie Mittoo" (Phil Morrison, dir.)

Music won't save your life. And that's OK. Take it from Superchunk, the pioneering indie band that's celebrating 20+ years with new album I Hate Music and this anthem about coming to terms with the powers and limitations of music. The video itself is a more direct love letter, paying tribute to the music (and specifically, the vinyl)  that people hold close to their heart.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Despair" (Patrick Daughters, dir.)

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Despair" (Official Video)

Yeah Yeah Yeahs and director Patrick Daughters have transcendently stopped time before — and the intro here proves they can easily repeat the same feat — but they have a different tool in mind to capture that spirit of release: The Empire State Building.
