Symphony 19

WATCH IT: Philip Selway "By Some Miracle" (David Altobelli, dir.)

A man stands on the ledge. There's a cinder block tied with a noose around his ankle. There's a girl, of course. And an enigmatic ending, which also makes perfect sense if you know that Philip Selway day job is the drummer for Radiohead, a band well known for mysterious and complex videos (see "Just" for a reference point). --> watch "By Some Miracle"

WATCH IT: Goo Goo Dolls "Home" (Devin Sarno, dir.)

A young woman is adrift in the busy city of Los Angeles, letting the world buzz on by in this web-only conceptual clip for Goo Goo Dolls directed by Warner Bros. video commissioner Devin Sarno. The girl bears some literal marks of fear and loathing on her palms — no stigmata; merely key lyrics and words written in Sharpie — with an unhappiness and loneliness that remains until she reaches Home. --> watch "Home"

WATCH IT: The Black Keys "Tighten Up" (Chris Marrs Piliero, dir.)

This Black Keys video may be a sitcom set-up, but it's a good sitcom. A single camera, no laughtrack, bitingly sarcastic, yet heartfelt sitcom about being immature forever. The action takes place on a playground, where first the Black Key kids and then the Black Keys themselves find themselves in fierce competition over the attention of age-appropriate ladies. --> watch "Tighten Up"

WATCH IT: The Dead Weather "Die By The Drop" (Floria Sigismondi, dir.)

Perhaps best described as the bastard child of Marilyn Manson, Lady Gaga and The Art of Noise, this video by Floria Sigismondi for The Dead Weather "Die By The Drop" is a dark, enigmatic meditation (on duality? Split-personalities?) Although it could take repeated viewings and whatever gets your mind thinking non-linearly to figure it all out, there's plenty of gothic and surreal beauty to the imagery and to the post-blues rock stomp of the song. --> watch "Die By The Drop"
