WATCH IT (Again): Kanye "Power" - Marco Brambilla directors cut

I've already said all I think I can say about Kanye West "Power" — unless you're interested in a really rudimentary discussion of the Sword Of Damocles and the other classical symbology in this video portrait — so I'll just point out the differences between this director's cut and the official TV version. The big addition is the inclusion of stuff you can't air on TV — nudity, curses — but this version has some more interesting changes, especially when you consider the different intents of a purely artistic piece vs something that had to serve certain commercial interests (as almost all music videos do).

WATCH IT: DJ Muggs vs Ill Bill "Cult Assassin" (MoreFrames, dir.)

The unambiguously real hip-hop duo DJ Muggs and Ill Bill provide the soundtrack for some old-school Saturday Morning Cartoon action, complete with violence, retribution and evil plots. If only it had the sadism of Tom & Jerry. --> watch "Cult Assassin"

WATCH IT: Metric "Stadium Love" (Dawson + Borin + Starbuck, dir.)

When animals attack indie rock bands? Not quite, since Metric stays safely ensconced in a cage while the animals seem most intent on non-human prey (and if yr sensitive to such things: All the attack footage is stock, so no animals were specifically harmed for this video). --> watch "Stadium Love"

WASHINGTON POST: The Vids Are Alright...

Washington Post TV critic Hank Steuver will someday be named a patron saint of music videos. The fact that his article about the prevalence and power of music videos on TV ran on Easter just makes it all the more clear.

Although I'm predisposed to enjoy any article which quotes me and shines a positive light on the industry I work in, Steuver's article is a must-read for anyone sick of the usual narrative about music videos.

SHOT: Shadow Shadow Shade - Michael Graham, dir.

A poster-image from "White Horse," an ambitious music video trilogy for L.A. buzz band Shadow Shadow Shade starring actor Jason Ritter... The project is comprised of three videos that collectively tell a tale that can either be described as a post-apocalyptic love story, or a sneak peek at our impending doom (which is not to say those two things are mutually exclusive)... Directed by Michael Graham... Coming soon...
