The Carvels NYC - "Scarcity"

THE CARVELS NYC new video for the song “Scarcity” is off their upcoming EP, “Life is Not a Waiting Room,” (November 2018, Tarbeach Records).

CARVELS NYC chanteuse Lynn Von Pang has been tearing up stages across the tri-state area since she was a teenager, in bands such as Da Willys and Trick Babys. Decades later, she’s still a force of nature; a full-throated beauty fronting one of the best bands in town.

SCARCITY features Ms. Von Pang alternating between three roles: a soap opera heroine, a sexy plus-sized pinup girl, and a straight-up diva backed by a trio of male dancers. Inspired by modern feminist writers like Virgie Tovar, Jes Baker and Roxanne Gay, among others, the lyrics celebrate feminism and the lack of fucks to give that comes with age.

Cherry Pie Pictures director, M.N Kinski, splices the look and feel of 1960s and ‘70s daytime television commercials with modern-day Von Pang, sharply spoofing the “American housewife” of those times. Those poor women . . . their laundry is never bright or white enough. Their coffee is never as hot and delicious as their husband would like. Her children aren’t nearly angelic enough, and her menstrual leakage is really quite out of control. The horror!

More #FuckYou than #MeToo, Von Pang explains, “I’m talking about the scarcity mentality; the beauty myth, diet culture and all the other antiquated ideals that oppress women and female-identifying people. This song is the about the joy of finally being free from these restrictions—ditching toxic relationships and having fun breaking the rules.” With a sound that’s part girl group, part punk, “Scarcity” is a lighthearted sing-along with a serious message.
