Trying To Be Cool with Phoenix, Canada and a Double-Dutch One Take Video

Imagine a funhouse designed by an acid-eater fan of Rube Goldberg, Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali. Then imagine precisely plotting out a one-take video filled with delightful nonsense. Then, halfway through, you say fuck it, and the dancers come out for a huge routine that would make Stanley Donen proud (or envious).

But, wait. Throw all that away. What's really going on here is a controlled experiment in chaos. Two cameras taking turns shooting a continous 16 beats for a one take "relay race" of a one-take video.

I like to think it's a comment on the continual one-upmanship in the music video world. You need a stunt to get noticed and after a while you're faced with the challenge of what comes next — go ask OK Go, who went from backyard dance routine to dance routine on treadmills to a Rube Goldberg extravaganza to a dog ballet to a musical roadshow to, shit, let's just let the fans make a video.

It's a forever escalating/exhausting war of trying to cool and get attention, with every victory more shortlived than the last. And that is a very beautiful, or scary thing.

Corey Feldman "Ascension Millienium"

Corey Feldman has made a music video. You remember Corey from his hit movie run in the ;80s— Goonies, Lost Boys, Gremlins, Stand By Me — or maybe his rebirth as reality TV star and professional celebrity. He's been in plenty of videos, everything from Moby to Katy Perry. And he's released an album before — Love Left — and has performed songs on TV (please watch this Howard Stern TV Show performance, please), so I guess it's about time.

Corey is intense here. And takes his main performance and styling cues from old friend Michael Jackson. The video is in the style of a one-shot, taking us through a full day for Corey: We're talking lots of women, partygoers and rockers, all on-site at his house. Also on-site for a quick came: Goonies co-star Sean Astin.

Also, did I mention Corey is intense here? Like, super intense?

Pink "True Love" (Sophie Muller, dir.)

P!nk - True Love ft. Lily Allen

Pink welcomes us inside her life on the road with husband Corey Hart and daughter Willow. There's equal amounts of live performance and some pop-art fantasy sequences that depict the highs and lows. Lily Allen also gets a solo spot, although the way she chops that carrot is a clear tip-off that she's not found True Love yet.

Best Music Videos Of June 2013

Yet another month where I had to leave off some great stuff just to keep this Best Music Videos of the Month list to a reasonable length.

Keep in mind that some of these are not safe for work, not safe for epileptics, and not safe for anyone  sensitive about matters pertaining to sex, violence, religion and hairstyles.

Individual links below leading to descriptions and credits. And a full YouTube playlist if you want to just let 'em rip like the good old days.
